Guest Blog - the ISM team describes their approach (and subsequent jubilation!) to introducing Emirates Airlines to the San Francisco market…

They stopped. They looked. They smiled. They discussed.
To paraphrase Sally Field, “They liked it. They really liked it.”

Emirates Airlines Marketing Launch in San Francisco

But let’s back up 36 hours or so, to when we first started unpacking box after box of artificial palm fronds (1,280 fronds to be exact). The plan was to make a typical station domination anything but typical. For those who don’t know, a “station domination” is when a single advertiser buys every available unit in a particular station. In this case, the advertiser was our client Emirates, the world’s fastest growing airline. The site? San Francisco’s Montgomery Station. And the crew? Five installers, two ISMers, one Emirates client…and a partridge in a palm tree. Even before we had hung the first frond, onlookers began to take notice. In the middle of their commute, they’d take time to come over and ask what was going on. Some had heard of Emirates. Most hadn’t. (One even thought that Emirates was a cookie. And another was more interested in what kind of video camera we were using, but I digress.) Everyone agreed, this was gonna be a hit. And oh was it ever.

In addition to the 32 “Palm Trees”, we created wallscapes, floorscapes, dioramas, transit posters and banners. 215 different pieces in all. Let’s just say that Janice, our production manager, has earned herself a much needed vacation. (And don’t even get her started on the taxi wraps, news racks, billboards and monitors that we worked on for the rest of the city.)

Domination Jubilation. The Emirates Airlines marketing launch in San Francisco

But let’s get back to those palm trees. After weeks of searching for the “perfect frond” and experimenting with the proper rigging, we were finally ready to roll. Of course, it wasn’t until we saw the enormity of the task at hand that we realized, well, the enormity of the task at hand. (Who knew that there was a proper way to fold a frond?) Even our client had to get his hands dirty and help out. And at one point, when the installers were ready to call it a day, we actually had to bribe them with a Quizno’s run and sandwiches for everyone.

When all was said and done, the installation was a huge success. (And our hands and forearms were killing us from all that frond folding.) It was quite nice to see people walking into the station with no idea who Emirates was and walking out booking reservations on their iPhones. (Okay, maybe that’s a slight exaggeration.) But at the end of the day, we felt like we really left our mark on the city.

Sort of like our own little San Francisco treat.

-Ana Gonzalez

The Frequent Traveler: Online travel revolution

This article takes a look at the revolution created by the online platform for the airline industry. To quote:

Ten years ago only 16 million people had “any experience of using the Internet.” Today “more than 400 million passengers book online; e-ticketing saves the industry $2 billion a year (and paper tickets are set to disappear by 2007). Direct booking saves airlines another $1.2 billion a year in flight reservation fees with the Global Distribution Systems.

Value-focused carriers emerge as new growing airline model

Experts say that VFC’s (value-focused carriers / airlines) could be the next growth drivers in the airline industry. Important to note that VFCs are not the same as no-frills airlines. Examples of VFC’s include Flybe (UK), JetBlue (USA) and Kingfisher (India). A particular high-potential region is the Middle East, where development and travel is growing at a rapid rate.

“Value-focused carriers have emerged as a new airline model, merging the benefits of both traditional and no-frills carriers, according to Sabre Airline Solutions.

The company’s consulting business president Nejib Ben-Kheder described VFCs as being identified by their focused route networks, simple fare structures, relatively cheap sales and distribution arrangements, limited array of partnerships and streamlined ground operations”

How to avoid paying higher rate APD

British Midland are exploiting a loophole so that business class passengers only have to pay the standard rate of APD. They have removed the partitions which demarcate ecomony and business class. I can’t understand this as the business class passengers are still gaining access to lounges and receiving a higher standard of on board catering. Therefore how can they claim that, solely on the grounds that the partition is no longer there, it is now a one class plane? At present passengers travelling with airlines which only have one class, even if it is all business class, such as with Silverjet, pay the lower rate. However with that scenario everyone on the plane is receiving the same treatment.

in a challange mounted by the Federation of Tour Operators. Firstly it is claimed that the UK Government can not impose charges solely to exit or enter the UK, charges can only be made for use of an airport service. Secondly the manner in which the recent doubling of APD was introduced is being called into question. Only seven weeks notice was given and passengers who had already booked were still liable for the additional tax.

I also picked up on the point made in the article that APD is hardly an environmentally friendly tax as it is each individual passenger who is charged rather than the plane, it was not exactly an incentive to have a fuel efficient, lower emissions plane full of passengers.

It will be interesting to see what happens. I have always thought that APD should be earmarked for spending on environmentally beneficial projects such as improving public transport.
